Interview With David Robertson
Ex Queens Park, Glasgow Rangers, St Mirren, East Stirling and Cambuslang Rangers Winger David Robertson tells us a few memories from his career. You can read below what he had to say as he reflects below.
“My first spell as a young 16 year old with Cambuslang Rangers was around the early 60’s. I played twice for the first team but was released at the end of season. I had scored 2 goals on my debut and walked away with some great memories as we won the Central League Championship A Division, Glasgow Cup and the Pompeii Cup that year.
After the disappointment of being released I went on to play for Queens Park and Glasgow Rangers. In 1971, I had eight reserve team games at Ibrox scoring 4 goals, 1 against Aberdeen in my first game then a hat trick against Motherwell in my third. I was asked to stay but as I loved playing football and with not being guaranteed regular football I said no, in hindsight I should have gave it another year, especially after what we went on to accomplish as a team winning the UEFA Cup Winners Cup and the players we had on our books, John Grieg, Sandy Jardine Colin Stein and Willie Johnston to name a few but I was young and wanted to play football, money was secondary for me, so I left.
As an amateur I went back to my local club before signing a professional contract for East Stirling. I had a great year scoring 17 goals before new year and was then transferred to St Mirren. In 1974, I was approached to return to East Stirling who had appointed a young 32 year old manager by the name of Alex Ferguson into his very first managerial role. I played under Sir Alex for the year he was with us before his move to St Mirren. When Ian Ure came in and took over I was sadly not in his plans.
Davie McLaggan saw this as a green light and with the transfer done I was on my way home and back to Cambuslang to start my second spell, which to me was bitter sweet as Davie, when releasing me at sixteen, had said that I did not have enough balance to be a good footballer. I am glad he saw the error in his ways and resigned me. Unfortunately I broke my ankle in league cup action against Blantyre Vic’s but was back playing within six weeks scoring 2 goals in my come back game against East Kilbride and a few goals during that season. It was great to be back playing with my local club, who I still support to this day.”
The club would like to thank David Robertson for taking the time out of his day to speak with us and share his story.
